The Opportunity
We are seeking to appoint an Operations Manager to work over the Schools of Natural Sciences (https://www.utas.edu.au/natural-sciences ), part of the College of Sciences and Engineering (https://universitytasmania.sharepoint.com/sites/CoSE ).
The College of Sciences and Engineering (CoSE) incorporates the School of Natural Sciences, Technology Environments and Design and the institutes of AMC, IMAS and TIA. The College provides world-class research and teaching, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University’s Hobart, Launceston, Sydney and Cradle Coast (Burnie) campuses.
The Operations Manager will be responsible for providing high-level advice and leading relevant activities to ensure that research and teaching infrastructure and programmes are delivered efficiently, safely and professionally. The incumbent will manage field, laboratory, infrastructure and equipment, ensure a culture of safety within both Schools, and lead the risk management/mitigation programmes to comply with University, State and National legislation and policy.
Key Accountabilities:
Conceptualise, develop, implement and oversee policies and procedures geared toward safety and operational risk mitigation across the School within the context of broader legislative and policy requirements.
Assist with managing the risk portfolio of the School, with respect to SH&W obligations and reporting responsibilities, undertaking consultation directed at the resolution, reduction, and mitigation of major risks.
Manage the operational effectiveness of teaching and research infrastructure.
Provide development and implementation strategies to the Leadership Teams for the acquisition, maintenance, refurbishment and utilisation of the built environment, field and laboratory assets, teaching spaces and research facilities in accordance with broader School and University strategic direction and requirements.
Provide high-level advice and SH&W leadership to the Head of School, Heads of Discipline, Technical Teams, School staff and Higher Degree Research students ensuring the safe, efficient and effective utilisation of these resources across all research projects and teaching programs.
Provide technical advice and recommendations to the Leadership Team on issues as they arise, input into strategic and operational planning and regular reporting with respect to progress against established goals.
Your Application
To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate:
Completion of a degree qualification in a relevant science discipline with at least 4 years subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
Knowledge of research, teaching and operational procedures within the tertiary sector, including experience in one or more of the following areas – Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics and Physics.
Proven level of understanding and experience with SH&W legislation and operations and demonstrated ability to implement a culture of safe practice in the work environment.
Ability to show initiative, work autonomously, with proven ability to plan and prioritise complex and diverse activities, and identify relevant issues.
Well-developed oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with a diverse range of people, resolve conflict and collaborate effectively to deliver outcomes, including the capacity to ensure staff are developed to their full potential.
Remuneration
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 8 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $143,448 comprising base salary within the range of $107,829 to $122,605 pro-rata plus 17% superannuation.
