About the opportunity

The University of Tasmania is looking for a Sustainability Data and Reporting Officer to support their Sustainability team.

As our new Sustainability Data and Reporting Officer, you will support the University’s strategic sustainability goals through data-driven insights and impactful reporting. You will assist in data collection and analysis for key initiatives such as sustainability-related surveys, ratings and rankings, carbon emission inventories, and more - transforming complex information into clear, actionable insights and compelling narratives.

Our ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of holistic sustainability, a strong foundation in qualitative and quantitative data management, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  You will be able to work both independently and in a team environment, engaging with diverse stakeholders across the University.

Our preferred location for this role is Hobart or Launceston, but working remotely is an option for the right candidate.

What you’ll do:

  • Support planning, implementation and data analysis for biennial sustainability and travel behaviour surveys of students and staff, as well as annual sustainability literacy survey and other ad hoc sustainability-focused surveys.
  • Support internal reporting activities, including regular performance reports, annual sustainability reporting and reports on progress towards various sustainability-related strategies and plans.
  • Support external reporting activities, including qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis for submissions to Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Reporting System (STARS), Times Higher Education Impact Ratings, QS Ranking, Sustainability and Climate Risk Disclosures, and carbon neutral certification.
  • Convert data and findings into understandable tables, graphs, briefing notes, and written reports to suit the target audience or stakeholders.
  • Provide mentorship for Sustainability Integration Program for Students interns and fellows in relevant projects.

­What we’re looking for:

  • A qualification in a data analytics, environmental management, environmental science or a related field and subsequent relevant experience, or extensive experience and specialist expertise with a deep understanding of holistic sustainability.
  • Demonstrated experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, and reporting, particularly in sustainability contexts, with the ability to generate actionable insights in well-constructed written reports to support strategic decision-making.
  • Proven high-level analytical skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
  • Sound judgement and demonstrated problem-solving skills, with the ability to take initiative to address challenges before they escalate.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to translate complicated technical analysis into compelling narratives.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Excel, Qualtrics, data visualisation platforms, Word, and database software

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $116,872 pro rata comprising base salary within the range of $92,120 to $99,891 plus 17% superannuation.
