About the opportunity

The Cyber Security and Research Engagement Officer will play a key role in enhancing the University's mission for research excellence and impact. This position requires a blend of cybersecurity expertise and community engagement skills. The role reports to the Manager – Digital Research Infrastructure and Cyber Security and will assist with the evolution and deployment of the Digital Research cyber security maturity uplift.

What you’ll do:

  • Assist with the identification, initial analysis, and documentation of cyber security events and potential incidents affecting Digital Research environments.
  • Support the delivery of cyber security awareness and research data management education for researchers and students.
  • Work collaboratively with IT Services teams and relevant stakeholders to support cyber security compliance activities.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and updating of guidance materials, procedures, and documentation relating to research data handling, cyber security controls, and related processes, in line with established frameworks and policies.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with researchers, University staff, and external partners by providing clear, courteous, and timely support and escalating complex or sensitive matters as required.

What we’re looking for:

  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn, the complexities of the University environment, including the differing governance and risk considerations for research and enterprise data.
  • Foundational knowledge of cyber security principles and practices, or the demonstrated capability to develop these skills, particularly in areas such as security monitoring, compliance, and investigative support.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical or operational support and advice to a range of stakeholders, with the ability to explain concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • A basic understanding of Linux-based environments and awareness of recognised cyber security frameworks such as NIST.
  • Experience reviewing system or security logs for anomalies, documenting findings, and escalating potential issues in line with defined processes.
  • A demonstrated willingness to develop core cyber analyst skills, including learning scripting fundamentals and the use of common cyber security tools such as Splunk or Wireshark.
  • Tertiary qualifications in ICT or cyber security, industry certifications, or extensive relevant experience in ICT or cyber security.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $116,872 comprising base salary within the range of $92,120 to $99,891 plus 17% superannuation.
