About the Opportunity
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Database/DevOps Engineer to join our team at the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN). This role is pivotal in designing, optimising, and administering large relational and NoSQL databases that support the collection, management, and delivery of complex marine research data. You will be responsible for managing cloud database replication, migration, and backup/recovery processes, while also supporting the cloud engineering and infrastructure needs of the AODN. Additionally, you will manage database extract, transform, and load (ETL) workflows, ensuring database security, data migration, and administration. Your expertise in Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud-based deployment will be crucial in this role.

This position will see you develop your skills in the DevOps space and work under broad direction, managing complex workflows effectively.
What’s required
- Significant experience in relational database management including database design, administration, troubleshooting technical issues and performance tuning, preferably using PostgreSQL and PostGIS and NoSQL alternatives such as Elasticsearch.
- Experience in DevOps methodologies, tools, and practices Including experience with version control systems, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines in particular for database operations, infrastructure as code (IaC) tools (e.g. Terraform, Ansible), containerisation (e.g., Docker, Elastic Container Service), and monitoring/logging solutions.
- Expertise in cloud security concepts, architecture, and services and identity and access management (IAM) solutions.
- Strong understanding and knowledge of AWS database services specifically but not limited to RDS as well as experience with AWS data analytics services with practical experience deploying and maintaining this infrastructure in AWS. • Demonstrated methodical approach to database design, management and optimisation.
- Proven ability to create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation. • Detail oriented team player with well-developed written and verbal communications that result in effective and appropriate communication, including the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and concisely.
- Experience working in agile teams as well as collaborating across teams and with external consultancies to achieve tangible outcomes.
Qualifications and Licences
- Degree qualifications in Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems Engineering combined with significant relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant extensive experience and/or education/training.
- AWS Data Engineer certification (or equivalent) is desirable.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 7 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $126,637 comprising of a base salary within the range of $98,473 to $108,237 plus 17% superannuation.
