About the opportunity
The Residential Communities Officer (RCO) is a key student‑facing role within the University’s Campus Accommodation, which includes historic residential colleges across Hobart, Sandy Bay, Launceston, and Burnie. The position provides high‑quality support to a diverse group of domestic and international students living on campus.
The RCO plays a central role in delivering a positive residential experience by ensuring a strong welcome and transition, engaging with students as partners, supporting their health, wellbeing, and academic progress, and responding empathetically to their needs and concerns.
Working under the guidance of the Dean of Students and aligned with the Residential Communities Strategy 2025–2030, the RCO contributes to creating safe, vibrant, and uniquely Tasmanian living environments where students can thrive. The role supports a collegiate model focused on belonging, shared growth, personal discovery, and student‑led leadership, guided by principles of being resident‑focused, collaborative, innovative, and sustainable.
This role involves some work outside of standard work hours, with fixed days and shifts finishing as late as 7:00pm and some Saturdays on a rotational basis.
What we’re looking for:
- Excellent cultural competency combined with experience working and effectively supporting people from culturally diverse backgrounds and communities.
- Demonstrated capacity to take a people-centred and safety-first response to complex and critical incidents in accordance with Work Health and Safety legislation and University Policies and Procedures.
- Demonstrated proficiency in digital tools and platforms, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and information management systems, with the ability to adapt to new technologies to support efficient and effective service delivery.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with evidence of a strong people-centred communication style, as well as capacity to coordinate and present to large groups, provide role-modelling to student residents, and possession of strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills,
Qualifications and Licences
- A degree level qualification with relevant subsequent experience in a human services or education-related organisation, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (Registration Status - Employment).
- Drivers licence
- First Aid (desirable)
- Mental Health First Aid (desirable)
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $116,872 pro-rata comprising base salary within the range of $92,120 to $99,891 pro-rata plus 17% superannuation.
