About the opportunity

Communications Managers in defined academic areas are part of a team communicating the role, purpose and priorities of the University to support our strategic agenda, transformation programs and other longer-term projects.

Communications Managers are based in defined University of Tasmania academic areas and are responsible for ensuring that strategic communications deliver on the area’s strategy and the University’s strategic direction. The Communications Manager (Sciences and Engineering) will have highly developed, effective and contemporary communication skills to respond to opportunities to promote the high-quality learning, teaching, research and engagement happening in Sciences and Engineering.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the development and implementation of a communications strategy that supports the goals of Science and Engineering and effectively delivers on the University’s broader strategic direction.
  • Provide high level strategic and operational advice on the delivery of effective communications, develop communications plans and assets and effectively manage the implementation of these as required to support the University’s response to issues with reputational risk.
  • Actively identify story and expert comment/analysis opportunities - including vision opportunities, effectively managing them into the media, social media, web and intranet at the Sciences and Engineering and University level, working with stakeholders in Marketing, Engagement and Advancement as required.
  • Monitor and report on media performance to identify successful strategies and activities, take corrective action where necessary and make recommendations for future improvements and initiatives.
  • Where appropriate co-ordinate with external stakeholders and institutions to enhance communication activities between the University and those parties.
  • Develop and implement an internal communications strategy with a view to increasing staff engagement and awareness of Sciences and Engineering and University strategy.

What we’re looking for:

  •  Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of media and communications strategy.
  • Proven issues and crisis management skills delivered under deadline and amidst competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to effectively analyse media to identify potential issues and recommend and enact appropriate responses.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven experience in the preparations of high-level correspondence, communications and publication materials.
  • Proven ability to act with discretion on matters of a sensitive or confidential nature.
  • Excellent organisational, time management and planning skills, with the ability to work effectively independently with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in use of following platforms:
      • Squiz Matrix software to upload and edit on digital platforms
      • Sharepoint for file management and to upload and edit on staff intranet Microsoft suite
      • Zoom for meetings/webinar/videoconferencing

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 8 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $152,033 comprising base salary within the range of $114,282 to $129,943 plus 17% superannuation
