Technical Officer

About the opportunity

The Australian Maritime College (AMC) is a specialist institute of the University of Tasmania and is a world leader in maritime education, training and research.  Our vision is to inspire and shape the maritime world and our aim is to lead real change. The AMC’s Centre for Seafaring and Maritime Operations delivers specialist degrees in the Nautical, Marine Engineering and Maritime Electronics and Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved certificates of competence up to Ship’s Master, Chief Engineer and Electro Technical Officer levels. The Centre also operates an internationally renowned suite of research and training facilities, including a simulation centre, seafaring related laboratories, marine engine installations, and a fleet of vessels, which provide the infrastructure to conduct world class research and a unique student experience.

The Technical Officer will take an active ‘hands on role’ in contributing to the safe and efficient design, implementation, operation, maintenance and repairs of the vessel fleet, as well as teaching and research equipment in a maritime setting. The incumbent ensures core performance criteria of statutory compliance, operational efficiency and regulatory compliance are achieved.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop and enhance maintenance schedules for plant and equipment, vessels, and key infrastructure
  • Execute upgrades, repairs and maintenance
  • Provide contractor induction and supervision
  • Ensure effective communication with key stakeholders
  • Where required, assist with the delivery of learning and teaching activities­

What we’re looking for:

  • AMSA Certificate of Competency- Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 NC or above (highly desirable)
  • Trade Qualification in one of the following trades
    • Diesel Mechanic, Fitter, Fitter and Machinist
    • Boat Builder & Repairer
    • Electrician
    • Auto Electrical Technology / Electronics
  • Extensive experience in the marine industry and in particular vessel husbandry
  • Demonstrate leadership skills and an ability to work in a team environment.
  • Effective communication skills

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $113,029 comprising base salary within the range of $89,091 to $96,606 plus 17% superannuation.
