  • Undertake academic, student support and administrative duties within the Tasmanian School of Medicine
  • Enhance access for Hobart Clinical School students to rural clinical placements
  • Part-time (0.5 FTE), 2 year fixed term role based in Hobart

About the opportunity

The University of Tasmania is building a vision of a place-based University with a mission to enhance the intellectual, economic, social and culture future of Tasmania, and from Tasmania, contribute to the world in areas of distinctive advantage.  The University recognises that achieving this vision is dependent on the people we employ as well as creating a people-centred University that is values-based, relational, diverse, and development-focused.

The Coordinator of Rural Medicine Placements at the Hobart Clinical School (HCS) is a new position designed to enhance access for HCS students to rural clinical placements in the areas surrounding Hobart. By providing supervised placements in rural practices, residential aged care facilities and associated district hospitals it is anticipated that students will develop an excellent understanding of rural medicine and the potential for future career opportunities and pathways in rural medicine.  This position would be suitable for a clinician (eg GP or Rural Generalist) to increase teaching and supervision capacity within their clinical practice locations.

There will be opportunities to develop and supervise student projects in rural medicine, for example clinical audit and community engagement activities. The appointee will be required to undertake academic, student support and administrative duties within the Tasmanian School of Medicine with respect to the rural community rotations and teaching.

What you’ll do:

  • Make a strong and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities
  • Undertake scholarly undergraduate coursework teaching of an exemplary quality, including coordination, and development of teaching materials in the area of rural health research.
  • Liaison with the rural health community to develop novel rural clinical placements and supervision models
  • Development and supervision of a limited number of student projects with a rural health theme.
  • Contribution towards the coordination of the annual Year 2 Rural week activities at HCS.

What we’re looking for:

  • Completion of recognised primary medical qualification, together with postgraduate teaching or research qualifications, or equivalent, permitting registration in the State of Tasmania.
  • Clinical/industry/professional experience relevant to the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team in the successful management of projects.
  • Experience and demonstrated achievement in University-level or clinically-based teaching and learning.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with students, staff and stakeholders from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • A capacity to align with the University’s values, behaviour and leadership expectations.
