  • Develop and implement high-quality, future-focused programs and collections that support teaching, learning, and research both within and beyond the University.

About the Opportunity

As University Librarian and Curatorial Director, you will provide dynamic and visionary leadership to effectively manage the University’s libraries, galleries, museums and cultural collections across multiple sites. The role is responsible for responding to an ever-changing complex environment and innovatively delivering high quality services, programs, and collections for learning, teaching, and research for the University community and beyond. As part of its contribution to the University’s Strategic Direction, you will lead and communicate the strategic direction of the University Library and Cultural Collections with vision, passion and imagination.  Providing cultural leadership and innovation to the design and implementation of new library and cultural collections services and spaces (including integration of emerging technologies such as generative AI, Open Scholarship, ICIP) will enable you to future proof the Library as the heart of university life. Positioning the Library and Cultural Collections as an expert partner in learning, teaching, and student support will enable the success of student learning outcomes.

What’s Required

  • Deep knowledge in at least one of the following areas, with broad understanding across others: Cultural leadership; Collections management; Curatorial and exhibition development; Gallery and library management; Museology and open scholarship; Audience engagement and public art commissioning; Contemporary art and conservation
  • Proven experience in high-level strategic planning, policy development, and governance within a large, student-focused environment.
  • Ability to lead organizational change and drive innovation across complex systems.
  • Skilled in leading and developing high-performing, culturally diverse teams.
  • Strong capability in change management and fostering inclusive workplace practices.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to work flexibly with multiple stakeholders to resolve complex challenges.
  • Confident communicator with expertise in advising on emerging trends in learning, teaching, and research.
  • Strong track record in contract and project management, including financial planning, reporting, and presentation.
  • Familiarity with legal, infrastructure, and international best-practice standards in cultural engagement and collection operations.
  • Awareness of emerging technologies relevant to higher education and cultural sectors.

Qualifications and Licences

  • Post graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant training and/or extensive senior management experience and substantial expertise and achievement in the management of a large complex library or cultural organisation, preferably in the higher education sector.
  • Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (Registration Status – Employment)
