About the opportunity

The Laboratory Manager plays a critical role in the oversight and management of the Research Laboratory at the University’s Medical Science Precinct (MSP), in Hobart’s CBD. This includes safety, regulatory and legislative compliance, and the ethical operation of facilities. This significant PC2 research laboratory accommodates over 200 users undertaking world-class medical research. This laboratory facilitates research across a variety of medical science fields and makes use of a range of modern research technologies including multiphoton and super resolution microscopy, flow cytometry and molecular biology. The key users of the Research Laboratory are researchers from the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, Tasmanian School of Medicine and Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre.

What you’ll do:

  • Outstanding operational management of the MSP Research Laboratory.
  • Provision of a safe working environment for staff and students ensuring all policies are implemented.
  • Ensure MSP Research Laboratory meets all compliance requirements.
  • Enable the delivery of core technologies including oversight of maintenance, certification and cost recovery processes.
  • Manage research laboratory staff and a team of casual staff that facilitates the out-of-hours response to laboratory alarms.­

What we’re looking for:

  • Significant experience in providing technical laboratory support.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in laboratory practices and hazardous goods management.
  • Experience in the development, implementation, and management of risk assessments, safe working practices and standard operating protocols.
  • Demonstrated understanding of statutory regulations encompassing laboratory operations.
  • Ability to supervise and manage staff and students to ensure a safe and efficient workplace.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 7 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $126,637 comprising base salary within the range of $98,473 to $108,237 plus 17% superannuation.
