Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Biomedical Engineering
Contribute effectively to the success of research programs run under the Biomedical Engineering group
Based at the Medical Science Precinct (MSP) but will also involve work with the School of Engineering at the Sandy Bay campus
Full time or part time (minimum 0.5 FTE), fixed term appointment until Dec 2029 based in Hobart
About the opportunity
The Biomedical Engineering research group is a collaboration between the Menzies Institute for Medical Research and the School of Engineering at the University of Tasmania focussed on the application of biomedical engineering to improve neonatal care. The purpose of the position is to support the Biomedical Engineering research group in the development of technologies in relation to two research programs aiming to improve respiratory care for preterm infants - the AUTOPIA program (automation of oxygen for preterm infants), and the Innovative Respiratory Monitoring program. The AUTOPIA program includes preclinical biomedical engineering research, multicentre clinical studies and a large-scale cluster randomised trial. The Innovative Respiratory Monitoring program aims to develop a series of technologies, including novel sensor hardware and software algorithms, to improve respiratory monitoring and the detection of apnoea in preterm infants.
The candidate is expected to have a strong background in applied biomedical engineering and will be involved in the development, evaluation and commissioning of hardware and software technologies, and the deployment of this technology to clinical sites across Australia and internationally. The candidate will work closely with national and international collaborators and industry partners to deliver the next phase of these innovative research programs.
The position will be responsible for delivering research projects contributing to the two programs of work, including the design of sensors, devices and algorithms and the development and implementation of methods to evaluate performance of these technologies. The position will be primarily located at the Medical Science Precinct (MSP) but will also involve work with the School of Engineering located on the Sandy Bay campus. Travel to participating sites and/or collaborating institutions may be required.
What you’ll do:
Contribute effectively to the success of research programs run under the Biomedical Engineering group, including liaising with industry partners and national and international research collaborators, coordinating engineering technical activities, and communicating outcomes of the research activities to relevant industry and community stakeholders.
Undertake research tasks associated with the program, including:
investigating new sensing technologies, sensor and acquisition hardware, signal processing, and event detection algorithms for neonatal respiratory monitoring
developing prototype devices to deliver oxygen in low-resource settings and instrumentation to allow continuous data collection in remote settings for clinical evaluation
developing control algorithms through simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing to optimise the delivery of oxygen to newborns in both high-resource and low-resource settings
working with researchers and clinicians to evaluate technologies in clinical settings
Make an effective and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities.
Undertake high-quality research of national and increasingly of international standing, secure external competitive and other funding, publish research findings and contribute to the successful supervision of research higher degree students, in order to meet and regularly exceed the University’s research performance expectations for the level appointment.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links inside the University and locally and nationally with the discipline, relevant interdisciplinary domains, profession, industry and/or wider community
What we’re looking for:
A PhD in Biomedical Engineering or equivalent in a relevant field.
A strong record of, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved national recognition and made worthwhile contributions to the field of Biomedical Engineering, demonstrated by quality publications, presentations at conferences and preferably success in securing external competitive and other funding.
A record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally with the discipline, profession, industry (where relevant) and wider community.
Demonstrated ability and practical experience in one or more of the following research areas: biomedical engineering, mechatronics, electronics, control systems.
Demonstrated ability in managing and delivering a biomedical engineering research program.
Experience working in a clinical research setting, liaising with clinical staff.
Experience conducting engineering research in a clinical setting including development of relevant technical and safety documentation for governance and ethics approvals.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $150,759 comprising base salary within the range of $110,992 to $128,854 pro rata plus 17% superannuation.
