About the Opportunity
The Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN), is seeking an experienced Senior Web Developer or UI Web Developer.
As a Senior Web Developer, you will support the technical development of a small, skilled team in geospatial and web-based applications and services. The Senior Web Developer will also provide technical expertise in system design, guiding the team in the development and implementation of new data-driven systems.
The Web UI Developer will enhance AODN’s data visualization and delivery capabilities by designing and implementing modern, user-friendly web applications. This role involves collaborating with the team to support and maintain existing systems, ensuring high-quality UI/UX, and staying updated with emerging technologies.
The AODN infrastructure employs open-source principles and standards-based frameworks, utilising ISO and OGC standards for metadata and data, and is hosted on an Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform. These positions offer a unique opportunity to contribute to a national effort in observing and understanding our marine environment.
What’s Required
UI Web Developer
- High level skills with core web technologies HTML, CSS and JavaScript as well as experience with React, Semantic UI, MUI or similar in the implementation of user interfaces for web applications.
- Specific and detailed understanding of modern web application technologies, including design of RESTful API’s.
- Knowledge of web accessibility standards, search engine optimisation and application tracking analytics.
- Experience in the SCRUM framework for agile project delivery.
Senior Web Developer
- Highly skilled with core web technologies HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React, as well as component libraries such as Semantic UI, Material UI or similar.
- Specific and detailed understanding of modern web application technologies, including design of REST API’s.
- Extensive programming skills in Java or Python or web technologies within agile software development teams. In addition to experience developing solutions using a cloud provider such as Amazon Web Services.
- Demonstrated technical leadership with an ability to develop team members and transfer knowledge to team members as required. User focused, with experience effectively leading an agile software team in successful product delivery.
- Highly organised individual with excellent communication skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with staff and collaborators from a wide range of academic and technical backgrounds.
- Experience in managing the development of web-based applications.
Qualifications and Licenses
- Tertiary qualifications along with a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, geospatial sciences or similar, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 7 or 8 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $147,034 comprising base salary within the range of $98,473 to $125,670 plus 17% superannuation.
