Research Assistant (Marine Spatial Data)

 

  • Fixed term, Part time (0.8 FTE) 12-month position; tentative start date: 1 December 2022.
  • Based in Hobart (IMAS-Taroona)
  • Assist in the provision, analysis, and visualization of marine spatial data.

The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is a world-class centre of excellence for research and education at the University of Tasmania. The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies also work with government and industry on major fisheries and aquaculture research programs, such as the Sustainable Marine Research Collaboration Agreement (SMRCA), which conducts local fisheries and aquaculture research.

The Opportunity

In your new role as the Research Assistant, you will be actively involved in the data management of the Tasmania’s Marine Atlas, which includes the handling, cataloguing and visualization of marine spatial data products to be embedded in the online mapping platform. The successful candidate will support the ongoing identification and cataloguing of relevant datasets through review of grey and primary literature, applications in marine activities and planning in Tasmanian waters.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Be actively involved in the data management of the Tasmania’s Marine Atlas.
  • Liaise with software management collaborators to assist in the development of the online mapping platform.
  • Assist in identifying relevant datasets to Tasmanian end-users through literature reviews and direct engagement.
  • Understand and identify the needs of State Government, Local Government, industry, researchers, non-governmental organizations, stakeholders, and the broader Tasmanian community.
  • Deliver spatial data products and outputs of spatial analyses.

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;

  •  A tertiary qualification in a relevant field, such as environmental science, geography, biology, GIS or equivalent qualifications and professional experience.
  • Ability in GIS and the handling of spatial data.
  • Experience with external engagement with stakeholders or collaborators.
  • Experience with SQL geodatabases is desirable but not essential.

Remuneration

Appointment to this role will be at Research Assistant Level 3 and will have a total remuneration package of $94,653 (pro-rata) comprising base salary of $80,900 plus 17% superannuation (pro-rata).
