Senior Technical Officer (Facilities, Hatchery and Biosecurity)


  • Fixed term, full time position until July 2024
  • Based in Hobart
  • Requires weekends and after-hours on call roster

The Opportunity

The Senior Technical Officer (Facilities, Hatchery and Biosecurity) will primarily be responsible for planning, preparation and implementation of maintenance and stock management, oversight of day-to-day hatchery operations, management of project biosecurity, technical staff, and the on-call roster.  The successful candidate will adhere to experimental protocols, contribute to the development of manuals, and manage project compliance within the University of Tasmania risk matrix.


 Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide expert technical advice on the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of aquaculture systems.
  • Manage staff inductions, training, laboratory safety and field work risk projects.
  • Provide technical and logistical support for the day-to-day operation of the lobster hatchery facility.
  • Maintain biosecurity protocols, logs, audits, and complete annual updates to the biosecurity standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure the efficient and safe conduct of research activities and maintain the workplace and equipment in accordance with workplace health and safety.­

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;

  • Degree level qualification in Aquaculture or related field, work experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education, and training.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience maintaining animals in culture systems and the ability to identify and rectify variances in established protocols.
  • Ability to provide expert technical support in research experiments and ensure adherence to strict laboratory protocols.
  • Understanding of biosecurity principles.
  • Ability to manage records and data with a very high level of accuracy, including the ability to ensure confidentiality and protection of Intellectual Property.


Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $102,353 comprising base salary within the range of $80,675 to $87,481 plus 17% superannuation.
