Your New Role

Operating at a senior executive level, the Director plays a pivotal role in leading and managing activities in the Menzies Institute for Medical Research and realising its mission through alignment with the College of Health and Medicine’s strategic framework. Working closely and in partnership with the Advisory Board and the Executive Dean of the College, the Director will drive the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic and operational plans that enhance performance of the Institute. To ensure ongoing success, leading and developing sustainable and transformative partnerships and collaboration locally, nationally and internationally will be the key to success in this career defining role.

Working effectively with governments, medical research institutes, health and medical employers, community interest groups and other external entities will enable the institute to meet its strategic objectives. Focusing on maximising funding, the Director will drive the development and implementation of strategies and programs to improve individual research and academic performance across all levels, with a particular focus on mentoring and supporting early and mid-career researchers.

 

What you’ll need to succeed

As an outstanding and highly experienced strategic leader, you will bring to the role demonstrated success in translating a strategic vision in to outstanding tangible outcomes. A deep understanding of issues surrounding medical research at local, national and international levels and capability to take a leading role in policy development and debates will enable you to effectively drive outcomes. As a highly effective and influential communicator at all levels, you will demonstrate capacity to forge and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders across local, national and international communities.

An accomplished record in building and leading teams to meet key performance indicators in research, learning and teaching, and/or practice and business sustainability in related domains is essential in this role. Exceptional management capability, including a record of success in developing operational plans, setting budgets, and managing finances will ensure financial sustainability is maintained. Managing and developing staff and workforce planning in an academic environment, together with a comprehensive understanding of the Australian university sector, its role in research, learning and teaching will be the key to your success.
