About the opportunity

Working within the Genetics and Cancer Theme, the Research Vet will be a critical member of the Wild Immunology group at Menzies Institute for Medical Research (Menzies), at the University of Tasmania. This is a key position to help trial a vaccine to protect Tasmanian devils against devil facial tumours (DFTs).

Menzies is one of Australia’s leading health and medical research institutes. Menzies exists to improve human health and wellbeing by performing excellent basic, clinical and population health research that focuses on the major diseases affecting the Tasmanian community. Taking a disease prevention approach, our research is aimed at improving patient care and clinical outcomes for the community by translating knowledge and clinical actions.

What you’ll do:

• Manage the health of captive Tasmanian devils and fat-tailed dunnarts, implementing immunisation protocols and other research procedures.
• Lead or assist on Tasmanian devil trapping trips in the field.
• Submit and manage Animal Ethics projects with the Wild Immunology Group.
• Coordinating sample collection from wildlife with different stakeholders.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of procedures, samples and laboratory results.
• Assist and train new students and staff in animal procedures and sample collection.
• Learn laboratory procedures from the team and assist with laboratory assays

­What we’re looking for:

• Registered veterinarian, or appropriate overseas training to become registered as a veterinarian in Tasmania prior to starting this role. (A PhD with extensive wildlife field and lab experience may also be considered.)
• Experience working with Tasmanian devils and other native species, including handling, anaesthesia, clinical management and necropsy procedures. (Alternative field work experience may be considered.)
• Laboratory experience, including cell culture, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and/or molecular techniques.
• High level written and oral communication skills, including in animal ethics applications and reporting, writing scientific articles and presentations.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment, and capacity to implement work health and safety (WHS) policies and safe work practices.
• Valid driving license and willingness to drive to field locations pulling a trailer with devil traps.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 8 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $152,033 pro rata comprising base salary within the range of $114,282 to $129,943 pro rata plus 17% superannuation.
