University Animal Ethics Committee – Community Member
The University is seeking expressions of interest from Community members to fill multiple vacant positions on our Animal Ethics Committee (AEC).
The committee ensures quality and integrity by reviewing a wide range of human research ethics proposals submitted not only internally but from external organisations across the state. The Community Member position is an essential position, contributing to the oversight and management of ethical considerations in research projects.
AEC Community member is defined in the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes | NHMRC (The Code) as a Category D member – a person not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution and who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond their undergraduate education. Category D members should be viewed by the wider community as bringing a completely independent view to the AEC, and must not fit the requirements of any other category.
This position presents a valuable opportunity for someone to make a meaningful impact. Members are required to attend 1-2 meetings per month of approximately 2 hours duration, plus allocate some time for preparation (reading and reviewing applications). Meetings are held via Zoom and members external to the University can choose to receive a small stipend for each meeting attended.
