Research Associate - Ice Sheet/Shelf Modeller

 

  • Full time 3-year fixed term position (flexible working arrangements may be considered)

The Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science (ACEAS) is a major $25M Special Research Initiative of the Australian Research Council.

 

The goal of ACEAS is to help the world community prepare for climate risks emerging from East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean by integrating knowledge of the ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and ecosystems, and their interplay. ACEAS is a national-scale, University-led centre for excellence in Antarctic science focused on this goal.

The Opportunity

This 3-year position will commence ideally in January 2023 focusing on modelling the physics of ice sheets and/or ice shelves. This position is part of the ARC Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science (ACEAS), a national-scale, University-led, international centre focused on helping the world community prepare for climate risks emerging from East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean by integrating knowledge of the ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and ecosystems, and their interplay.

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Build first-principle, PDE-based, mathematical models of key components of the cryosphere with varying degrees of complexity.
  • Apply state-of-the-art computational tools and/or develop and apply new numerical/ applied mathematics approaches to gain physical understanding of glaciological.
  • Develop original implementations of new physics in local-to-continental-scale ice sheet simulation codes.
  • Maintain a strong focus on communicating research findings by publishing in highly ranked journals and presenting to peers at local, national and international conferences.

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;

  • A PhD and/or postdoctoral expertise in computational/applied maths, physics, engineering, quantitative geophysics/ glaciology, fluid dynamics.
  • Experience in applied and computational mathematics and/or numerical modelling.
  • Demonstrated scientific interest in ice sheet dynamics.
  • Proven ability for problem solving and independent research.

 

Remuneration

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A or Level B and will be determined based on the successful candidate’s level of skills, qualifications, and experience.

 

Appointment at Academic Level A will have a total remuneration package of up to $115,310 comprising base salary within the range of $76,213 to $98,555 plus 17% superannuation.

 

Appointment at Academic Level B will have a total remuneration package of up to $142,799 comprising base salary within the range of $105,131 to $122,050 plus 17% superannuation.
