The Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) is a transdisciplinary research institute specialising in impact-driven research and a contemporary approach to teaching. TIA’s purpose is to support prosperous, innovative and sustainable agriculture and food sectors, and a healthy bioeconomy for our communities and society.

Set in a unique, island environment, TIA delivers premier research, development, extension and education programs for Tasmania and the world. Our strong links to the agriculture and food industries are underpinned by a Joint Venture Agreement with the Tasmanian Government. TIA provides input into policy development, education and the development of vibrant communities. Our contemporary undergraduate and postgraduate teaching program is designed to create the future leaders for agriculture and food systems, locally as well as globally.
We are offering a position as Senior Lecturer in Food Science to be responsible for developing and teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate units in areas related to technology, processing, safety, nutrition and innovation in the food industry. Additionally, the position is required to teach at South West University in China for the 2+2 program, Bachelor of Science (Food Safety) with the University of Tasmania.
In the role you will
- Make a substantial and sustained contribution to TIA in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities
- Undertake scholarly undergraduate (and if relevant postgraduate) coursework teaching of an exemplary quality in Food Safety and associated fields including to off-shore cohorts
- Undertake high-quality research of international standing, secure external competitive and other funding, publish research findings and successfully supervise research higher degree students to completion, in Food Safety, in order to meet and regularly exceed the University’s research performance expectations
- Develop and supervise research projects for a range of coursework students
- Foster a strong cohesive culture of trust, innovation, collaboration and excellence in teaching and science that is aligned with TIA’s strategy and values
You will be employed on a full time, fixed term basis, for a period of 5 years with the opportunity to extend.
To be considered, you will have
- A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field,
- A strong record in, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved national and preferably international recognition and made notable contributions to the discipline of Food Science, Food Technology and related areas. This capability needs to be demonstrated by a record of quality publications, presentations at conferences and/or success in securing external competitive and other funding,
- A desire to perform teaching off-shore, in particular, China
- A strong record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally with the discipline, profession, industry and wider community.
- Demonstrated experience in supervision of research higher degree students.
- High level communication and interpersonal skills including experience and proven ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, research specialists and organisations.
- A capacity to foster excellence in teaching and research.
Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level C and will have a total remuneration package of up to $154,184 comprising base salary within the range of $113,867 to $131,781 plus 17% superannuation.
